Of all the flight bags I've seen out there, my favorite is the standard Air Classics Flight Bag. Its not too big, yet has enough compartments and pockets to hold just about everything you could possibly want to take flying with you. When flipping through your standard Sporty's magazine, or browsing a website like AvShop, its easy to get carried away, and purchase all kinds of junk and clutter for the cockpit that in the end are just going to make your life more miserable. Being a pilot means flying the plane and watching out for traffic, not operating your Portable Traffic Alert System and your Garmin 530, while fumbling with your plastic chart organizer and dropping your plotter beneath the seat. A cockpit can quickly become filled with things that don't need to be there. Yes, its nice to have a backup, but in our professional opinion, a flight bag should consist of no more than what is necessary for safe flight. That means charts, headset, airport facility directory, writing utencils and paper, kneeboard, e6-b, fuel sampler, and if you must, a GPS and tranceiver. NO MORE!
The flight bag pro gives you too much spare room which you will undoutedly fill up at some point as all humans do with extra space, which means that six months down the road, that 65lb bag just might make you change your mind about going up for a spin.
For flight instructors who just need their headsets and maybe a chart and checklist for a run around the circuit, headset bags are our favorite choice.
The Flight Briefcase is our least favorite pick. The bag is too narrow to hold any standard headsets, and the shape of the bag makes it constantly fall over on the seat in flight making it even more difficult to get past the overlap and into the zippered compartment. Furthmore, the name drives us crazy! Its not a briefcase, its a sachel. |
