The Attitude Indicator™ Expert Review:
Life as a pilot involves a long adventurous journey in which one tries to fill the airplane up with more and more junk that they don't need until they either have to upgrade their airplane, or quit eating those hundred dollar double-cheese burgers. That is why we have included only those tools we feel is necessary to act as a safe pilot!
The ASA Flight Timer is a decent first attempt by ASA and for this they are to be commended. Its small, compact, and has a host of options which you may find come in handy. We still like your cheap $15.00 solution at your local target and grocery store because they have a ten digit keypad which makes entering in times much easier and faster. However, if you need the extra features and want a timer that is designed for aviation purposes, then the ASA Flight timer is your best bet!
As for flashlights, we would recommend only one! The Self-Powered Mega-Brite LED Flashlight is the perfect cockpit solution. We can't tell you how many times each of us have shown up to the airport for a night flight, only to realize the batteries in the flashlight were dead, and there weren't any new ones in the flight bag. With this awesome flashlight, you can wind it for one minute to charge it up before getting into the airplane, and have more than 30 minutes of bright light available to you throughout the duration of your flight! Best of all, if an emergency condition should arise, you can power your cellphone indefinately by simply plugging in your car power adapter into the featured power receptacle. While we like the idea of flashlight pens, watch batteries are expensive and rarely convenient to change out.
Parallel Entry! Oh wait, I didn't even use ASA's new Holding Pattern Visualizer. This is a perfect example of junk for the cockpit! As they advertise this, we couldn't possibly disagree more with even considering the idea of bringing this device into the cockpit. If you can't compute a quick holding pattern entry in your head, then you shouldn't be flying instruments. This device could even be dangerous, forcing a pilot to stop his or her scan while in IMC. Where we appreciate this device and even recommend it is in the class room and at home while studying for the instrument rating, or refreshing one's skills.
As for view limiting devices, we love the new ASA Hoodwink! Its totally convenient, folds into a ridiculously compact size, and does a great job at limiting the field of view. Foggles had a good idea, but they should have made the plastic solid black, rather than frosted. On a sunny day, the plastic devices become brighter than the sun at times, blinding the pilot and making it nearly impossible to see anything.
If its kneeboards you seek, then ASA is our favorite pick. There are countless kneeboards out there, some of which cost a pretty penny like those fancy ones over at zulu works. However, a kneeboard is a kneeboard, and all of the extra bells and whistles that come with many of the other kneeboards out on the market are quite useless to be blunt. Furthermore, anytime you use an aid that isn't common place among other pilots, it creates a weakness in your ability. If you begin to rely and need these aids, then you piloting skills suffer, and your ability to adapt to new aircraft and situations can become hindered by the many small habits and crutches you have built along the way. As we always say, FLY THE AIRPLANE. Its a BIRD, not a NEST, so quit NESTING! =)

Ergonomically designed and engineered for reliability, ease and convenience, the ASA Flight Timer should be considered essential equipment for all aviators. Pilots will be able to accurately calculate time to the next waypoint, fuel tank changes, turns in holding or an instrument approach with complete confidence. The Flight Timer has been designed to meet the needs of all aviators, from student pilots working on their first cross-country to flight instructors and seasoned veterans. Applicable to both VFR and IFR flights, an ASA Flight Timer should be in every pilot's flight bag.

The Tri-Lite flashlight is equipped with red, green, and white LEDs providing maximum flexibility and everything the pilot needs to maintain night vision while also providing the true-color options necessary for accurate chart, fuel, and oil color interpretation. Hands-free operation is made possible by 3 Velcro®-like (3M Dual Lock) mounting strips. The light can be snapped onto headsets, kneeboards or other flat surfaces, and can be quickly removed and re-attached. When attached to a headset, a focused beam of light is directed wherever the pilot looks. Rugged LEDs rated for 50,000 hours of use mean a durable advantage over standard light bulbs. Uses standard AAA batteries for easy replacement. Included utility clip allows the light to be secured on flight bags, belts, or keychains when not being used in flight.

Constructed of rugged ABS plastic, the AC2EX is built to withstand the extremes a typical portable intercom encounters. Inside, a streamlined circuit board features ceramic hybrid IC chips for high reliability. The front panel features a logical layout that is easy to read with controls grouped conveniently above the battery compartment. For battery powered operation, simply open the easy-access battery compartment on the front panel and add two 9 volt batteries (one is required but two prolongs life). The AC2EX is compatible with either 12 or 28 volt electrical systems and connects securely with AVCOMM’s unique "positive-lock" powercord. If the power supply to the intercom is lost, the intercom automatically switches to battery back-up power.

You are flying a heading of 055 when you are issued this clearance ".hold east of the ABC VORTAC on the zero niner zero radial, left turns." This clearance is enough to invoke a rapid heart beat in the most experienced pilots. Although holding patterns may be used on any instrument flight, holding clearances are issued infrequently enough for pilots to get a little rusty on the procedures. Visualizing a holding pattern from a current position is one of the more challenging aspects of instrument flight. ASA's holding pattern computer shows pilots which entry is appropriate given the assigned holding radial. The design not only displays the appropriate entry procedure for both standard and nonstandard patterns (direct, parallel, or teardrop), but also depicts how pilots get to this entry, given their current aircraft heading. Holding pattern practice is now part of the instrument currency requirements (every 6 months, instrument-rated pilots must execute 6 instrument approaches and practice intercepting and tracking a NAVAID, as well as holding procedures). This handy pocket-sized tool may be used as a refresher on the ground, as well as a quick-reference guide in flight. A perfect learning tool for experienced instrument pilots, students, and convenient instructional aid for flight instructors. Made from durable plastic in the USA.

All pilots must practice instrument procedures as part of their training curriculum, from private pilots to those working towards an instrument rating. This is usually accomplished by wearing a view-limiting device to restrict the pilot's vision to the instrument panel, which prevents the pilot from looking outside the cockpit for a visual reference to his or her attitude and location. The Hoodwink is unlike any other view-limiting device available. Its unique design easily and automatically springs open when removed from its pouch and packs away for storage with just a simple twist. Hoodwink is lightweight, yet durable enough to withstand the rigors of daily use. In fact, it's so lightweight that pilots may forget they're wearing it! The compact 4"x4" slim pouch is small enough to fit in a shirt pocket or in almost any flight bag compartment. Hoodwink can be used with or without headsets. One size fits all and pilots will love its comfortable, unobtrusive functionality. With flight bags bursting at the seams these days, Hoodwink is a welcome addition for the student or instructor looking to lighten the load. Instructors can even carry one around as a spare for students who may forget to bring their own hoods. It's the ultimate in form, function, and convenience!
